No wonder we are so busy nowadays, there isn’t a moment to lose in catching up on the inundating amount of information that social media offers. Otherwise, things will soon stop to make sense to us before we realize — things like “dat boi” — a frog riding a unicycle.

As in the case of most dank memes, it’s hard to give a clear definition of what the “dat boi” meme means, considering that it very likely doesn’t have a standard intended purpose at all. “Dat boi” is the colloquial version of “that boy,” and “waddup” simply means “what’s up.” The meme is frequently used on Twitter, as a GIF or a static image, accompanied by the words “Here come dat boi! O shit waddup!” Sometimes the person posting the frog picture only writes “here come dat boi!” And people who see the post can respond with “o shit waddup!” in the comments, as if expressing the excitement of seeing their pal.

If you haven’t seen the meme on your Twitter or Tumblr yet, you are not the only one. The frog first cycled into public attention only around the end of last year, and received more recognition after MTV News posted the meme on its Instagram account in May. TheNew York Magazine calls it “the year’s best meme so far.” Well, you can judge that for yourself after finishing this article that tries its best to be informative of what’s going on.

First of all, “dat boi” is very flexible in its usage. You can simply post the meme with its classic taglines, perhaps when you are bored or when you desperately want to prove that you are in the know. Or, you can put it into context, like this:

Or, feel free to give it a creative spin. You don’t have to use it in a perfectly logical way. It’s a dank meme, so we all get it that it’s not meant to make perfect sense. Just experiment with it. There’s no wrong way of using the meme, and people will admire the fact that you can already apply a meme that not many understand.

Still, besides spamming our social media, are there other meanings that this frog can have?

Mariani Weinstein, a Weinberg sophomore majoring in Psychology, said the text for the meme reminds her of a childhood game “Marco Polo,” in which one child shouts “Marco” and another must immediately respond with “Polo.”

“Replying [o shit waddup!] is like fulfilling people’s desire to be noticed and heard,” Weinstein said. “There are hundreds of posts on one’s social media everyday and a post can be easily ignored, so when people reply with the text associated with the meme, it means the post is seen.”

The New York Magazine’s Brian Feldman gave another attempt at unpacking the “dat boi” phenomenon: “…his [the frog’s] relaxed demeanor projects the kind of imperturbable mellowness you would expect in someone called Dat Boi. This is about as good an explanation as I can muster.”

“Dat boi” is not the first frog that’s gone viral. Pepe the Frog has been circulating for over two years and still hasn’t gone out of style. Both Dat Boi and Pepe have come a long way from where they initially appeared, be it a physics textbook or a comic book. Their evolution processes seem random and bizarre, yet hilarious. Maybe, after all, a good meme is just a universal language that people on the Internet share, in order to communicate their feelings in a way that proper languages cannot. Perhaps its purpose is just to brighten up your day, to bring a smile to your face as you think to yourself “how ridiculous this is.”
