We got it working, but I'm replying with details in case anyone else ends up reading this post and could use the information on what fixed it.
In answer to your questions:
1. Since we got it working I'm not going to explain my computer setup details. It's an old system with various things upgraded over time, including the mobo.
2. The card worked fine with Windows XP (32). Two days ago I upgraded to Windows 7.
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor told me to download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website and install that driver after the upgrade. That is what I did, but had the issues and errors I detailed in my original question.
My (tech-guy) hubby found a more generic Realtek Driver for Windows that did the trick last night.
Not sure what he searched on, but the result says "Realtek Ethernet driver for Windows 7 (bit and bit), Vista (bit and bit)"
He downloaded it from this link:
He says the choice of sites was more or less random off a google search, there were several places he could have downloaded it from.
When he installed it to my computer, Windows 7 recognized it and used it to make my Network card work. I'm happily using the Internet once again!
