Google has a native tool that makes it possible to download Gmail emails in a compressed format. It is the simplest and most straightforward solution to the problem.

Once you’re in, you’ll see a panel on your left. There you should click on “Personal info & privacy” and then “Control your content.” While there, see a section labeled “Download or transfer your content.” In it, you’ll find a box labeled “Download your data.” Select it and click on the button labeled “Create Archive.” This will enable you to download Google data.

Google gives you the opportunity to select the apps you would like to have in your archive, including the specific data you would like to archive in each app. In this case, all you care about is backing up your Gmail, so, for now, click the button labeled “Select None” and scroll down to the Gmail icon. If you’re ready, click on the "Next" button and proceed to the next step, which is to decide the format in which you would like to download your data. In this case, you can either go for the popular ZIP format, which will compress your data into a small size to store on your computer, or choose the TGZ format. You will also be able to pick how you would like to receive the backup, whether as an email in your Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox, and you also can choose the maximum file size for your archive. When you’ve finished with all that, click on the button labeled “Create Archive.”

You also might want to back up your contacts along with your emails. In that case, your options are typically CSV, HTML or VCARD format. It’s also an easy process, and you can do it while you back up your emails. When you get to the point in which you pick the apps you would like to back up, after clicking “Select NON,” scroll down to contacts and slide the toggle next to it.
