Are you tiring of the old Minecraft sounds and want to change them? Well then, This instructable is for you.
Step 1: Locate .minecraft and Create the Pack
Lets navigate to the .minecraft folder, where all of Minecraft's assets are stored. There are several ways to do it, but the easiest way is to hit Win+R, and type %appdata%\.minecraft into the bar. This should take you to C:\Users\-username-\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft. Go to the resourcepacks folder. Create a new folder inside and name it. Whatever you decide to name the folder will become the name of your pack..
Step 2: www.cronistalascolonias.com.ar
Open that folder you just made. Right-click, select new, and select text document. Open it, and copy in the the following text:

Use "pack_format": 3 for x resource packs, and use "pack_format": 4 with x and x resource packs. Finally, use "pack_format": 5 for x resource packs.
The description does not have to be that. It can be anything you want.
Click file, save as, and set the save as type to all files. In the file name box type www.cronistalascolonias.com.ar, all lowercase. Close notepad and delete the new text document.
Create a folder called assets in the pack folder, and another one inside the assets folder called minecraft. This is where the sound folders will go.
Step 3: Finding the Sound(s) You Want to Change.
Go back to the .minecraft folder. Open assets, then indexes. Open the json file that corresponds to the Minecraft version you are editing with notepad. This is the minimum for opening it. I recommend you to download Notepad++, which will format the file correctly, or, if you have Firefox, just use the that instead. I've sometimes had better luck with Firefox; Notepad++ sometimes just formats it onto one line. Click Ctrl+F to open the find box. Search for the sound you are looking for. Once you find it, take note of the file path. Let's use the sound "levelup", which happens whenever you advance in an experience level, as an example. Find it, and you'll see that the path is sounds\random. So, in the minecraft folder you created, make a folder called sounds, and another folder called random.
Step 4: Creating the Sound
Now to make the sound for minecraft. To do this, You will need Audacity. Either record a sound, or download one. If you download one, It will need to be in WAV file format. You can convert it to wav at Online Convert website. Once it has converted, download it to the desktop. Open Audacity and drag the file into the blank space. Check to see if it plays, and click file, export, export as OGG. Name the file exactly what you saw in the json, in this case, levelup, all lowercase, and select the file type as OGG Vorbis files, and export it to the folder random in the resource pack. In order to play it afterward, using a media player, not minecraft, you will need VLC Media Player. If you want to add more sounds, search in the json file, check the file path, create the folders, create the sound, and export it.
Step 5: Test the Sounds
Now to test the sounds. Open Minecraft, hit play, and click options. Hit the resource packs button, and you will see your resource pack. Click the arrow to activate it, and click done. Wait a few seconds, and go back to the menu screen. Go to singleplayer, and play a world. Get experience by killing mobs and mining ore. When you advance a level, The sound should go play.
Step 6: Adding www.cronistalascolonias.com.ar
You may have noticed in the earlier step, in one of the pictures, the other packs had an icon. You can make an icon in paint, or by getting better software, such as GIMP. Draw the image, or download one that is free to use. Put it into the folder of your pack right next to the assets folder. Call it pack. It must be png file extension. It also must be 1x1, 2x2, 4x4, 8x8, 16x16, 32x32, 64x64, x, x, x, or x, etc. When you play, you should see the icon in the resource packs list.

Hello – I found this helpful post whilst trying to help my son add (not replace) sounds to Minecraft Could you say whether there are additional steps to what you show in order to get his sounds available in a Note Block – such as changing/adding a json file. We have the ogg files prepared and in a new folder but they don't seem to be available in a Note Block.
I've searched everywhere and not been able to find the correct procedure for this. Plenty of help in changing sounds but not adding them.
You can't add sounds with a resource pack. You can only change existing sounds with a resource pack. To add sounds, use a mod.
The file name of the text document must be www.cronistalascolonias.com.ar Plus, here is the content a little more organized:

I've done everything you've said to do, but I don't see my pack displayed in-game
does this work for bedrock edition? i cant seem to find the assets folder or all of those other ones in .minecraft
This does not work for Bedrock Edition. It will only work for Java edition.

First of all: Thanks for this helpful tutorial, totally nailed it just by following step by step.
BUT, I got a little problem, every sound/effect I change is really deep in game. The ogg file ingame sounds completely different compared to the wav file I had before converting it via Audacity. How can I make the sound/effect sound the same?
Hmmmm. . . That's wierd. Are you changing the pitch or speed of the sound in Audacity? If not, it might be a bug in Minecraft or Audacity.
I didn't change anything in audacity i just exported the sound as ogg file :/

where does the minecraft folder with the sounds folder get placed? I've tried multiple places and I'm not hearing my sounds
Actually, I misunderstood your question.
The minecraft folder goes in the assets folder.
Well, you'll see that in step three. Look at image four. At the highlighted word, look at its file path. For this particular sound, www.cronistalascolonias.com.ar, the file path is minecraft\sounds\random. You have already made the minecraft folder. So, if you haven't, make sounds folder, then the folders that lead up to your sound folder, then the sound folder. Then you may add your sounds. For other sounds, look for the sound you want in the json file, then add the folders to the minecraft folder of your pack. If you are still having trouble, please send me the name of the sound that you are trying to change, and I shall see if I can help you.
If this is not the problem, then it might be that you haven't turned on the resource pack.
P.S. This instructable is for I don't play often. I don't know if adding custom sounds is different for It would be best to check out what other people say as well if nothing works after trying many solutions.
