What is the .AVASTLIC file type?
The .avastlic filename extension has to do with the Avast License file format and the associated .avastlic file type. Avast is the trade name used by AVAST Software (formerly, ALWIL Software) for a range of its popular desktop/mobile security solutions for MS Windows/Mac OS X/Android.
An .avastlic file is a small (~2 Kb) binary file that contains a license key for any of the commercially-licensed Avast products. Presence of a properly recognized .avastlic file allows to run the licensed application in the registered mode, and gives free access to updates. Although all .avastlic files may look the same, a given license file would fit only the product it was issued for.
Like other commercial software, Avast suffers from software piracy, and .avastlic license key files have become a major piracy target. Pirated keys are continuously blacklisted by Avast.
The .avastlic file type is registered in the system automatically once any Avast product is installed. A double-click upon an .avastlic file would result in a dialog window, requesting permission to add Avast license information contained in the file.
