Protect Yourself From Tech Support Scams

Tech support scams are an industry-wide issue where scammers trick you into paying for unnecessary technical support services. You can help protect yourself from scammers by verifying that the contact is a Microsoft Agent or Microsoft Employee and that the phone number is an official Microsoft global customer service number.

Hi DomMT,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you are facing issues with installation of Realtek audio drivers on your Asus motherboard running Windows I appreciate the efforts that you have taken and also providing us the information, which is very helpful. We will certainly look into this for you.

I see that you are running Windows 10 We do have a later version of Windows 10 that you can check through Windows Update.

However, let’s go ahead and try few steps and check.

Method 1: Run the audio troubleshooter.

I would suggest you to try the steps mentioned in Fix sound problems in Windows 10 and check.

If the issue persists, you can try

Method 2: Install alternate audio driver

  • Click on Search on Taskbar and type DeviceManager.
  • In DeviceManager, expand Sound, Video, and Game Controllers
  • Right click on the audio device and select Update Driver.
  • Select the option Browse my computer for Driver Software.
  • In the next screen, select the option Let me pick from a list of available drivers
  • Check the box Show Compatible Hardware and then select the option High Definition Audio Device. Click on Yes if you get the prompt.
  • Check if you are able to hear audio.

If you do not see any change, you can use Update Driver option and Search automatically to revert to existing driver.

However, researching on the model of your motherboard, there seems to be few updated drivers that we can try.

I would suggest you to install the following drivers from Asus website PRIME HM-A

Download and install the Chipset drivers and then install the latest version of Realtek Audio driver.

I also see that there are newer version of BIOS update available for this motherboard. You may also want to check with the manufacturer and update the BIOS to the latest.

Note: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

If issue persists, please let us know. We will certainly assist you further.

Regards,

Vivian S

You do not want to use the driver from the Realtek site. Always use the driver from the mfg of your motherboard

(or machine if using a laptop). [EDIT: Linked by Vivian ]

Even if that driver is older than a driver directly from Realtek it is likely the driver most suitable for your motherboards audio setup.

The biggest single reason for this is the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel may not function or function properly if not using a

driver from the mfg of the motherboard.

[EDIT: btw - I've never had a problem with audio drivers since forever.  :)   ]

Manually uninstalling via Programs and Features, rebooting and installing the audio drivers after reboot is still the most reliable method

- When people speak of the generic audio driver I believe they are referring to the driver Windows uses to create basic sounds such

as the Windows sounds. How much audio beyond those sounds is possible I don't know. I've never tried playing music or games

without the Realtek HD Audio installed.

- Your speaker levels image shows the system is using the Nvidia HD Audio, and in Device Manager there is no Realtek in theSound, video

section, which is where is should be (as well as what you see in System Devices).

This may indicate you are using a monitor with HDMI\DisplayPort connection, and if the monitor has speakers they should

currently be producing audio via your graphics drivers audio driver.

- If you are unable to install the driver from the mfg of the motherboard without getting a BSOD the audio chip may be borked.

However, there may also be a conflict between the Realtek and Steam streaming drivers. I would try uninstalling or at least disabling

the Steam Streaming drivers to verify.

- Once the Realtek drivers have been reinstalled successfully, you would need to go to Windows Sounds and disable the

audio for your monitor and set the Speaker\headphones (Realtek) as default.

I've found that Windows will at times change my setup to the monitor speakers if I disable them in Sound and don't also disable

my Nvidia audio via Device Manager (using both speakers and headphones connected to the PC).

I have been using the Realtek drivers now on three computers for over 10 years and here is what I find you MUST do to have a clean install.

1.) Disregard people telling you to use only the recommended drivers that came with or for your ASUS Motherboard. I have been running the latest official Realtek drivers on all 3 of my ASUS Motherboards now for over 10 years. Here is what I learned.

2.) COMPLETELY uninstall the Realtek drivers you have installed and use a free program like "Revo Uninstaller" to find any remnants of the software on your computer. The free version is fine to use no need to purchase this Uninstaller.

3.) Depending on what flavor of ALC chip you have download the appropriate driver as your Mobo requires. Your Mobo specs are here. You need to download the Realtek® ALC 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC as shown here:
ASUS PRIME HM-A

4.) The problem with your specific ALC version is that it is not listed on the Realtek site with specificity as shown here:
Realtek 8-channel codecs

5.) If you notice the closest version is the ALCS-VD codec version uses this one. If this one does not work you must contact Realtek and ask them to provide you a valid link to a valid driver for this Mobo. This version should work, however. Your ALC is version ' 8-Channel' and they are only offering the ' 8-Channel version'. Try and stay as close to the ALC version without going too far over as possible. The greater the software version to your Mobo ALC the more problems it will encounter. ASUS does this all the time with new software coming out but for some reason, their webmasters do not update the Mobo promotional/Spec website to offer the correct driver.

6.) If the latest version drivers do not work 'AT THIS TIME' use the version of the driver that came with your Mobo off of the CD that came with your Mobo and contact Realtek to ensure you get the correct link to the correct driver from them. They will come through for you. The place to ask them for this (if it requires it) is here. Their email appears to be *** Email address is removed for privacy ***
Realtek Support

7.) If you know how to find the correct driver and you know how to know what you're looking for then Realtek will come through. These engineers are pretty fanatical about customer support to get their ASUS boards working correctly. Happy Computing!

Hello, thank your for your response. Found that the easiest way was to just buy a USB sound card in order to bypass the drivers. (Link if anyone needs it) (£)
