Canon drivers wont download - this brilliant
If you are having many system problems, as you suggest, now is the time for a "clean" install of the Operating System and all other drivers and applications. That will probably fix the priner problems too.
As far as some other operating system. I just read Apple is having problems and major complaints about their operating system on both laptops and desktops (Plus they currently have a whopping 2% of the PC market). Linux requires some technical and programming skills to get it setup and operating and is not compatible with all hardware and some devices do not have a Linux driver.
Win ME isn't a bad OS if you have adequate memory (minimum Mb), and don't overload the system resources at Windows startup with a lot of unnecessary startup items and items that are in the systray/startup. Eliminate spyware, keep the antivirus updated and running, etc.
