Repairing the Windows 7 Update Folder Location
If the location where Windows 7 saves the update files becomes corrupted, then updates may not load. The temporary update files are stored at C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and that folder can be renamed and deleted to prompt Windows to recreate a folder. Note that any uninstalled updates that were previously downloaded will need to be downloaded again before they can be installed. Once the folder is repaired, new updates will download and install as normal.

Click "Start," type "Services" and press "Enter."

Scroll down to "Windows Update" in the Service window, right-click and select "Stop."

Click "Start," then "Computer." Double-click "C:," double-click "Windows" and double-click "SoftwareDistribution."

Right-click "Download," click "Rename" and type "BakDownload." Press "Enter."

Click "Start," point to the arrow next to "Shut Down" and click "Restart." Wait for your computer to restart.

Browse back to the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder. Windows should have automatically recreated the Download folder.

Click "Start," type "Windows Update" and press "Enter." Windows Update will proceed normally. You can now delete "BakDownload."

- If the Download folder is not recreated, change the name of "BakDownload" back to "Download" and use System Restore to reset your computer to an earlier time. Click "Start," type "System Restore" and press "Enter." Follow the onscreen instructions.
