Minecraft is a sandbox video game originally created by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson and later developed and published by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Other activities in the game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to build with and the ability to fly, an adventure mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator mode where players can fly around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or destroy any.

Minecraft is an open world game that has no specific goals for the player to accomplish, allowing players a large amount of freedom in choosing how to play the game. However, there is an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to play in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and placing blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects—mainly cubes—arranged in a fixed grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move freely across the world, objects can only be placed at fixed locations on the grid. As of version , Minecraft no longer supports computers running anything earlier than Java 6 (which includes PPC Macs) as Minecraft uses a new launcher that isn't compatible with older Java APIs. That was OK as you could still buy & play Minecraft on machines with the older launcher, regardless of being discontinued. However, shortly after the Microsoft buyout, Mojang (Microsoft) decided to drop support for the older launcher, rendering it unable to login to Mojang's Minecraft servers, thereby arbitrarily locking you out of the game.
