Is your touchpad is Synaptics ? If yes incase Try to reinstall the driver you have or make sure that windows update to download the desired one and restart the system.
Then navigate to control panel check for synaptics touchpad V(version of yours) and open it.
The touchpad properties will be opened there choose your options for the feature listed there and configure it.

Hi there.
Thanks for the advice but unfortunately neither of these worked. i had previously tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling a few times but that has not worked.
I have not made any hardware changes to the laptop at all since i got it a while ago
Also see my reply to KAVISAN about the driver software not even have the multi finger gesture option.

You may try reinstalling touchpad driver in compatibility mode and check the issue.
To install the driver in compatibility mode, follow these steps:
a. Right click the driver file and click properties.
b. Click compatibility tab.
c. Click to check "Run this program in compatibility mode for" box and select Windows 8.
d. Click apply and ok.
Now, install the driver.
