How to download a dwg file - apologise

Hi mbelic

That is strange behavior from the Edge browser . . .

Go to the same web page with Internet Explorer and see if Internet Explorer gives you the option to download that DWG file . ..

To open Internet Explorer, click your Start Button, then just type ie and hit Enter . . .

Hello, DaveM

Thank you for offering help.

I tried opening the web page via Internet Explorer and unfortunately it was unsuccessful, I got the same results as with Microsoft Edge.

Nonetheless, I would like to find a long term solution for Edge, using other browsers just to download files would be inconvenient. It would also be inconvenient to switch to another browser solely due to this one reason, especially considering I find Edge to be really useful for my needs (despite this little problem of mine).

I hope someone from Microsoft team catches on this and offers a workable solution.

For my university project I was instructed to download DWG file on university website and run it on AutoCAD.

The problem was, when I opened the website and tried to download it, Edge refused to download it and instead opened it like a website. Picture attached to this thread shows what the site looked like. I figure it was a code which was supposed to be rendered by AutoCAD.

Now I understand when I do the same thing for PDF file, Edge automatically opens them instead of downloading (download needs to be done manually through the PDF viewer built in Edge). My guess is that Edge does the same thing for DWG files though it cannot actually render DWG files and there is no save or save as feature to actually download the file or to open it through proper programs.

So, instead of just clicking on the link to the DWG file, instead do a "right click" to get a context menu that includes "Save target as".  This will tell the browser to just download the file without trying to render it on the screen.

Hello, graye

Thank you for offering help.

I did as you instructed but with no avail. It downloaded the file, but as a HTML file. AutoCAD could not recognise the file and was unable to open it. Unfortunately 'Save target as' is saving file as a web site instead of it's original file type. I guess Microsoft team has not thought this through.

That doesn't sound right to me Is it possible that the file is downloaded correctly, and it's just the file name extension that get's messed up?

Just curious what kind of "Learning Management System" does your university use?  Canvas, Blackboard, etc?   If so, then perhaps there is a way to tell the LMS that you just want to download without viewing it.  For example, when I attempt to download an SQL file I don't want to "view it" I just want to download it.   So, there is a hyperlink above where the file content is normally shown that allows me to just download it.
