What is a .msg file? These are email documents created by Microsoft Outlook. Microsoft refers to them as "Compound Message Documents." They are containers for streams of information related to individual email messages, including such email details as the subject, recipient, sender, sent date, received date, file attachments, etc. MSG files are also saved as COM structured storage OLE2 compound documents, which allows it's objects to be linked to other applications such as Microsoft Word or Excel.

The vast majority of .msg files you will encounter are created by Outlook, but know that there are other software programs that also use the .msg extension, and not all are compatible with Outlook.

To open and read a .msg file, you must have compatible software that can decipher Microsoft's proprietary file structure. You can use Outlook to open .msg files, or you can use one of the .msg viewer products from Encryptomatic LLC that will let you read, print and sort .msg files.

MSG files are encoded into binary and ASCII. Software with a hex editor or binary file parser would be able to reveal the internal workings of a .MSG file.

• Open MS Outlook
• Open email that is to be saved as .msg
• Click yellow outlook logo - located at the top left corner of message window
• Select "save as"
• Select a folder to save in and create a name
• Click drop down box - "Save as Type"
• Select "Outlook Message Format"
• Save

Done. You've just created a manual .msg file that you can now transfer over onto another computer.
