Each unit starts with an Intro page (new to this edition) and ends with a story page, with single or double-page sub-topics introducing new words in a realistic visual context and easy-to-learn "chunks."

The target new vocabulary is listed and simple practice activities help students put their new words into practice.

Story pages include pre-reading questions to build previewing and predicting skills and post-reading questions and role-play activities to support critical thinking and to encourage students to use the new language they have learned.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Leica 25mm/ D Summilux. This canvas was probably painted about –63, a little later than "Young Woman with a Water Pitcher" (MMA ). The arrangement of the table and the silhouetted chair in the foreground, the use of a curtain to cast shadows in the corner by the window, and the greater role of shadows throughout the composition would appear to indicate that the picture was made within a year or so of the "Woman with a Pearl Necklace" (Gemäldegalerie, Berlin) and the "Woman with a Balance" (National Gallery of Art, Washington), both of which may be dated about – The placement of the woman at the focus of receding objects invites the viewer into the scene. The map bar presses in upon her and precisely defines the space in which the lute is held. The chair at left, with a silhouetted lion's head finial overlapping the woman's vivid yellow sleeve, seems to presage the arrival of a visitor. Placing a viola da gamba in the foreground (here, in the worn area to the lower right) had been a common strategy for at least half a century, and is found in contemporary works by other Dutch artists such as Bartolomeus van der Helst (MMA ). The flow of songbooks across the tabletop and onto the floor reinforces the impression that the lutenist anticipates a duet. The picture suffers from abrasion, especially in the shadowy area of the foreground. Today is history lesson day. Are you sitting comfortably? If you have been following my blog closely, which I have no doubt you have been, you may have noted that I quite frequently escape the office and take a walk around the cemetery nearby. There are some fantastic tombs and gravestones etc and it is very quiet, the residents are anyway. Well one of the tombs, although not the most aesthetic belongs to the gentleman outlined below. The tomb is actually designed to be like a 'turntable' upon which locomotives were turned around in order for them to go back from whence they came. John Urpeth Rastrick (–) was a civil engineer, born in Morpeth, Northumberland, on 26 January His early background was in iron and mechanical engineering. He was involved in the building of bridges, construction of machinery and steam engines. In Rastrick was employed by the promoters of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, along with George Stephenson and others and was called before the parliamentary committee in support of the railway company, which was opposed by the canal companies. He was subsequently employed to support, in parliament, many of the principal railway lines in the United Kingdom. He constructed lines between Stratford upon Avon and Moreton in Marsh, opened the Shutt End Colliery Railway from Kingswinford to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. Rastrick also manufactured locomotives such as the Stourbridge Lion shipped to New York in August In Rastrick worked with George Stephenson in surveying the line from Birmingham to join the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, afterwards called the Grand Junction. He also marked out a line from Manchester to Crewe, thereby paving the way for the Manchester and Cheshire Junction Railway project, which was brought forward in , with Rastrick as the engineer. With Sir John Rennie, in , Rastrick carried the direct Brighton line against several competing projects. Towards the close of that year he was appointed superintendent of the line, with responsibility for the Shoreham branch, and also for the heavy works, comprising the Merstham, Balcombe, and Clayton tunnels, and the Ouse Viaduct of thirty-seven arches at an elevation of feet. These works were completed by the autumn of Rastrick later constructed extensions, which eventually were to form the series of lines known as the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway. Rastrick was a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers from , and a fellow of the Royal Society from He retired from active work in , and died at his residence, Sayes Court, near Chertsey, Surrey, on 1 November (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography)
