Can Google Read vCards?
VCards are address-book files that you can use with applications such as Apple Address Book and Microsoft Outlook. Google Contacts, which is an address book functionality built into Google's email service Gmail, can read vCards. If you have a Google account, you can use vCards to import or export your contacts from other address books.
VCard Format Overview
The vCard file format, which uses the extension “VCF,” is a type of digital business card. vCards have fields to enter a contact’s name, company, position, address, telephone, fax, website and custom information. VCards also support images and graphics, such as the person’s photo or company logo. A benefit of vCards is that they can contain one or multiple contacts, which you can then email or text message to share. You can also export and import vCards in many address book applications.
Gmail and VCards
Google Contacts, which is like your address book within your Google account, is built in to the Google email service Gmail. Gmail is compatible with vCards for both importing and exporting contacts. The vCard format lets you choose between exporting or importing one contact, several contacts or your entire address book.
Importing and Exporting VCards
To import a vCard into your Google Contacts, navigate to Gmail in your Web browser and then click “Contacts” in the left column. Click “More” and then click “Import.” Click the “Browse” button and locate your vCard on your computer. Click “Open” to import the vCard. To export a vCard, click the “More” tab on your Contacts page and then click “Export.”
Other Google Apps and VCards
Because vCards contain contact information and Google Contacts is built in to Gmail, you cannot import vCards into other Google applications such as Google Calendar, Google Documents or Google Earth. You can use a vCard to find contacts on Google Talk, but this is still via your Google Contacts in Gmail. Any vCard you upload to your Google Contacts in Gmail will be available in any other Google application where you can access your contacts.
